The pub was initially opened in 1875, the current building may not be the same as the original building but there has been a building on the site since the 1890’s. The building has been a well known feature of Catherine Hill Bay for at least 100 years and represents a history & tradition of inn-keeping in the Lake Macquarie area, longer than most other businesses. The Catho Pub is one of the oldest pubs still operating in the Hunter region, in 1971 it became the first hotel in Australia to be owned by Aborigines. Licensee -David Wotherspoon.
